Bastawi Baghdadi

Born 1927 , Omdurman , Sudan.

Bastawi is regarded as a pioneering artist of Sudan. Born in Omdurman. He studied drawing and painting at the school of Design ,Gordon Memorial College. In 1946 studied at Goldsmiths College ,London where he graduated in 1949 and 1950 and went on to Pratt Institute , New York in 1962.

Bastawi Baghdadi has earned a distinguished reputation for his portraits ,most captivating in their manner and style. He is equally known for his depiction of many aspects of Sudan with a sharp realism and a mature style. Bastawi is an influential teacher who has served in many important , administrative and teaching posts. He is a founding member of the Sudanese Association in 1951 and served on the National Council for the Arts and Letters in Sudan. Khartoum remains his home ,where he still paints.
